Storing Coffee Properly - How to Keep Your Coffee Fresh Longer

By Edward Alban

The way you store your coffee will have a great influence on its taste when you brew it. If you follow these simple guidelines, you will keep your java fresh for a longer period of time.

Storing whole beans is recommended because they stay fresh longer than ground coffee. The coffee beans (roasted) must be stored in an airtight container, isolated from light and heat. Always try to use a ceramic airtight jar, the kind that has a plastic gasket to prevent oxygen from entering, or your aroma from escaping. This method should keep your coffee beans fresh for a couple of weeks.

It is ideal to grind your coffee beans right before brewing it. You will notice the air is filled with an incredible aroma when you grind it, and you want that fresh aroma to be in your cup. Ground coffee stays fresh only for a few days. Also, like whole beans, ground coffee must be kept in an airtight container free from light and heat.

Freezing your coffee is one of the worst things you can do if you want to store it correctly and keep it fresh. When you freeze coffee, water molecules attach to the casing, beans and ground coffee. When this ice melts, water oxidizes the bean, ruining its taste. This phenomenon is even greater if it has been ground prior to freezing, since there is more surface area for the water molecules to adhere. If you decide to refrigerate coffee, please keep in mind that the refrigerator will condensate water inside the packaging, completely ruining your coffee.

Follow these simple guidelines and you'll be sure to keep your coffee fresh longer, and enjoy a better cup every time.
